How to Design Your Dream Furniture

We have completed a lot of refinished furniture! Along the way, we have rounded up some essential questions you should have answered before deciding to move forward with a piece of refinished furniture. Continue reading below to see our suggestions!

Style: What home style most suits you?

Boho, midcentury, coastal, farmhouse, minimalist, modern (just to name a few)! Having your home style nailed down is important because your furniture artist can plan your design confidently. If we are helping to source furniture to refinish for you, this decision can make or break, and we want to ensure we are getting the right furniture style!

We specifically tag our products according to home style. For instance, these boho nightstands made by Makeshop Furnishings are currently listed for sale.

Color: What is my color theme?

Rooms usually have a primary color (the main color on the walls or wallpaper) and a few accent or secondary colors. We love making a moodboard to get ideas. Once you have your primary color and accent colors, we can start to plan your refinished furniture design and provide different ideas for wood stain, furniture color, and accessories such as wallpaper or drawer knobs.

Feeling: What is the feeling of the room?

Your room may be light and airy or energizing and productive. When designing a room from scratch, consider how you want to feel in it.

For example, you’ll likely want a bedroom to feel relaxing and serene, while an office should feel productive and bright. This is a significant point that we want to consider!

Use: How am I going to use this piece of furniture?

A desk will have a much different use than a TV console. Think about how you will interact with the piece from a functional and emotional standpoint. This will help your furniture artist create a design that lasts while including those special details to help you build a relationship with your furniture.

Non-Negotiables: What are my hard NOs?

Do you have a style of furniture you detest? Do you have a color you can’t stand? Maybe you are all about color and find neutrals boring, or conversely, you will never be a color-in-your-home person. Sometimes, knowing what you do not want makes finding what you do want much easier.

To sum it up, our goal is always to make it as easy as possible for you to live in the space you feel the best in….because it shouldn’t take being an interior designer to have a gorgeous home.
